The nine casinos in Atlantic City and two New Jersey racetracks that provide sports betting made $294 million in casino gambling and sports betting revenue in March.

TRENTON, N.J – College basketball also brings another thing many people enjoy and hunger for. Money. For New Jersey sportsbooks during this year's March Madness college basketball tournament, it brought just that. The state's sportsbooks have made $63 million in the first three months of this year. This is due in part to a large number of money bettors spent on this year’s anticipated NCAA college basketball tournament.

With many teams facing unexpected upsets early in the tournament, sports bettors faced some harsh realities with their bets. New Jersey sportsbooks, however, cashed in big thanks to the surge in sports gambling on the tournament. The state's sportsbooks, both online and land-based, received $372.5 million in sports bets in the month of March. Making $31.7 million in March revenue alone.

The college basketball tournament is full of exhilarating highs and devastating lows, bringing in even more sports gambling money than other popular professional sports in the country.

Without the March Madness tournament sportsbooks in the New Jersey area would not receive anywhere close to the revenue they make with it. The sport is shaping up to be a stable source of gambling revenue for The Garden State, at least during the month of March.

The tournament provided leaps of revenue for various sportsbooks throughout the New Jersey area like the Borgata, who brought in $65.7 million in sports gambling revenue in March. This was a 1.3% increase from last year. The PlaySugarhouse had a 40% increase in bettors during the first week of the college basketball tournament compared to the week before.

Combining the nine casinos in Atlantic City and the two New Jersey racetracks that also provide sports betting, the total revenue for sports betting in March was $294 million. A huge sum of money for the State of New Jersey. A large portion of this revenue for the sportsbooks coming from betting on the college basketball tournament.

With the NBA discussing changes on the drafting ages for basketball players coming out of high-school the sports betting market for college basketball could lose some potentially big stars to the NBA. For the time being though, sports betting in New Jersey can continue to relish in the surge in March sports betting thanks to the March Madness tournament.

After two last minute shots during the NCAA college basketball regular season drastically changed betting lines, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is altering how they review buzzer-beaters in the NCAA tournament.

“During the NCAA tournament, we will review all shots made at the buzzer, as necessary, in the interest of accuracy of score and team and player statistics and even if the outcome of the game isn’t riding on the officials’ call,” said David Worlock the NCAA Director of Media Coordination/ Statistics.

New Jersey is an area close to very successful college basketball programs like Villanova, who won the NCAA basketball tournament last year. While residents are not able to bet on New Jersey-based schools in the March Madness Tournament, they are free to place bets on other teams. Referees reviewing last minute shots will most definitely give residents more security in placing their bets through a local sportsbook.

Atlantic City is one the locations where legal sports gambling casinos can operate within the state. Bettors can place their bets for the NCAA Tournament there as well as catch the sometimes heartbreaking final crunch-time minutes of a college basketball game.

The sports betting experience for New Jersey residents can take quick and drastic turn if a shot that isn’t supposed to count ends up counting gives them a bad beat. Executives from Caesars and MGM founded a new organization called Sports Wagering Integrity Monitoring Association (SWIMA) “to help combat fraud or illegal and unethical activity.”

The Pac-12 conference has also seen the need for integrity monitoring services. The likes of which can keep New Jersey bettors from receiving false results as they adjust to legal sports betting on March Madness contests within their own state.

“Fraud prevention and consultative services are key tools that support preserving and protecting the integrity of our sports and sports competition,” said Larry Scott, Pac-12 executive.

Hopefully the change in review protocol for the March Madness tournament will ensure a non-tampered environment for local bettors to enjoy the recently legal activity of sports betting in New Jersey. That being said, March Madness brackets are still the most common way for college basketball fans to have more fun with the NCAA Tournament. Brackets and office pools are based more on the total games won rather than placing traditional sports bets on each game.

With March Madness brackets extremley tempermental as it is - there is about a 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 of a perfect bracket - the last minute shot reviews just add another element of anticipation to your office challenge.

Just a few weeks ago, Monmouth Park – in partnership with bookmaking company William Hill – announced that, thanks to the dismantling of PASPA by the Supreme Court, they would offer sports betting in the state by Memorial Day. Of course, it’s the day after Memorial Day, and there’s still no sign of any publicly-facing legal sports betting outlets at Monmouth Park or in the state of NJ in general. This is thanks to a New Jersey Senate bill that’s slowing down sports betting adoption.

The bill, SB 2602, was passed on May 14, 2018, in anticipation of PASPA’s overturn, but it was only recently published online, and it includes this qualifier:

“No license to operate a sports pool shall be issued by the racing commission to any entity which is disqualified under the criteria of section 86 of P.L.1977…or to any person that operated a sports pool within one year prior to the enactment of this act.”

Because Monmouth Park would have been operating their books before the NJ state legislature had adequate time to craft fixed, comprehensive guidelines, the above means that, had they gone ahead and offered sports betting before the state was “ready,” they would forfeit forever their right to offer sports betting in the future.

The same, of course, applies to all gambling spots in NJ, though it is surprising that a state so vested in this issue (and that had been fighting it for so long at the federal level) wouldn’t have had a comprehensive set of bills ready to go the second the other shoe dropped on PASPA.

SB 2602 is expected to be sent to NJ governor Phil Murphy for his signature immediately after its June 7 senate vote, and – for its part – the management at Monmouth Park has been gracious with this little speedbump. Dennis Drazin, an executive with the famous racino, said simply that “We will certainly abide by the senate president’s directions.”

Nevertheless, the facilities inside Monmouth Park have been rapidly renovated to allow William Hill operations on the premises, and many modifications are ongoing as the site waits for the latest revised laws to be passed and signed for sports betting in New Jersey. Drazin reckons that Monmouth Park will see 5000-10,000 sports bettors line up on opening day sometime within the next two to three weeks.

MGM Resorts International wasted no time coming out with a glowing assessment of the recently released majority decision by the US Supreme Court to overturn a crucial – and much-reviled – federal ban on most sports betting activities in the country.

Six out of the nine SCOTUS members, including Chief Justice John Roberts, agreed that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) violated the 10th amendment of the US Constitution in several areas related to the powers inherent in the states to make their own decisions regarding gambling activities, namely sports wagering. The Supreme Court justices on Monday, May 15, 2018, released the results of their five-month deliberation on Murphy v. NCAA, which was brought before the court by former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to near unanimous praise from the American gaming establishment, and MGM Resorts was among that number.

MGM Resorts International, the owner and operator of Atlantic City’s most profitable and prolific casino, the Borgata resort, said the SCOTUS decision to strike PASPA from the federal rolls represents a tremendous win for the states and sports betting in New Jersey as they look to “protect consumers.” Presumably, killing PASPA will allow interested states to start offering their own legal sports betting outlets, which could simultaneously help rake in millions of dollars in taxable revenues from a global sports wagering market worth an estimated $150 billion to $250 billion while protecting players from the presumed pitfalls of the gray market sports gambling world. What exactly those pitfalls might be is not elaborated upon, but the fact remains that so long as sports betting is taking place at legal offshore sportsbook sites none of the handle taken in can be taxed by the states, and that is what MGM alluded to in their media release from Monday morning.

"We look forward to working with legislators and policy makers to achieve a regulatory outcome that benefits states and consumers alike while ensuring the integrity of sports,” the MGM communications department wrote in the company’s media release issued just minutes after the SCOTUS decision hit the airwaves.

MGM is without a doubt one of the biggest names in the casino gambling scene in the United States and abroad and it therefore stands to reason that the company could stand to benefit greatly in terms of bigger bottom line now that sports betting is more widely legal again throughout the nation. That said, no plans have yet been announced as to whether the Atlantic City Borgata or any of the company’s other casinos will start offering sports betting options in states where this was previously disallowed per the federal law. Nevertheless, MGM is apparently confident that it is in a great place to expand its portfolio and get a cut of the newly legalized sports betting marketplace nationwide.

"Having spent decades building trust with regulators, successfully operating sports books in Nevada, and hosting the world's leading sporting events, MGM Resorts International is extremely well positioned for a post-PASPA environment," the MGM media release concluded.

On June 27th, The Supreme Court of the United States made headlines by granting the petition for certiorari for the controversial New Jersey sports betting case. The nearly five-year battle has finally yielded a potential win for New Jersey. Below, we review key dates for the state, as well as potential arguments that they could make before SCOTUS.

The Timeline

The Supreme Court of the United States has a set way of doing things. 45 days after cert is granted to a petition, merits briefs need to be submitted to the court. So that puts New Jersey on the clock with a deadline of August 10th. As an official case to be heard and not just a petition, Amicus Curiae briefs must also be resubmitted. Those are due before the Justices on August 17th.

The Leagues have been given until September 14th to respond to New Jersey’s merits brief. After that, New Jersey has one month to give their reply to the Leagues, so we can expect to see those documents presented to SCOTUS on October 14th. The case has been given the standard one-hour oral arguments time frame, with 30 minutes given to each side. SCOTUS generally schedules these arguments between October and April.

The Argument For Legal Sports Betting in the United States

“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” This is an excerpt from the 10th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States and serves as the basis for New Jersey’s case against PASPA. Their argument touches on state sovereignty and anti-commandeering verbiage used in this part of the constitution. These arguments are brought forth by the actions taken by lower courts, in both the Christie I case and the Christie II case.

Christie I Overview: PASPA didn’t violate anti-commandeering laws because the state had a choice: repeal their own prohibitive laws or maintain them. In response, the state partially repealed the prohibitive measures to enable their casinos and racetracks to operate sportsbooks. That action led to Christie II.

Christie II Overview: The Third Circuit Court of Appeals reinterpreted PASPA in such a way that it does not only prevent the enactment of sports betting regulations, but it also prevents a state from repealing their own laws. Based on this interpretation, PASPA leaves the state with no options and no ability to govern itself (despite residents’ clear desire to have legal sports betting). New Jersey stipulates that this is a violation of the Tenth Amendment.

Judge Thomas Vanaskie, a member of the en banc panel that heard the Christie II case, stated in his dissent that PASPA went against the United States’ ideas on federalism by “dictating the manner in which states must enforce a federal law.” He said that PASPA was “effectively command[ing] the States to maintain and enforce existing gambling prohibitions.

PASPA’s proponents will argue that the federal government has the right to protect its citizens from vices and harmful activity. But when a federal ban is enacted without laying out a course of action with viable options for the states to choose from, it is a violation of the Constitution of the United States of America.

“The preemptive force of federal law does not authorize Congress to prohibit State action whenever and however it desires,” said West Virginia Solicitor General, Elbert Lin. “if Congress enacts a federal regime for which it takes clear responsibility, it may expressly preempt contrary State action to protect that regime. But if Congress simply prohibits State action in the absence of an existing federal scheme, it is unlawfully commandeering the states to enact federal policy.”

This federal ban not only keeps states from enacting the desires of its residents (commandeering their actions), it also violates the states’ sovereignty, as it prevents them from repealing their own laws as well. This takes away any choice that the state would have, making it a clear (in New Jersey’s opinion) violation of the Tenth Amendment.

The state will also argue that the federal government is showing preferential treatment to certain states over others. Their argument is that Nevada has a monopoly on gambling in the US, a multi-billion dollar industry. New Jersey will argue that the federal government showing preferential treatment to Nevada and other grandfathered states, violates Equal Protection, as it costs 46 states the ability to generate revenue in a similar manner.

The Plausibility Of An Outcome in New Jersey’s Favor

Even though the state has been turned down by every other court for sports betting in New Jersey, they actually have a pretty good shot at succeeding in the Supreme Court. Not only do they have a case that has piqued the interest of at least four justices (that is what is needed to have cert granted), it also has statistics on its side. In 2016, SCOTUS overturned 83% of lower court rulings. So really, New Jersey’ losing record is an advantage.

In addition to this, PASPA has been given the side eye by at least one sitting Justice (Ruth Bader Ginsburg), as well as by a former Justice (John Paul Stevens). PASPA’s selective enforcement in the US and the questionable viability of a federal gambling ban under the expanded reach of state sovereignty might not be able to stand up under actual arguments, rather than its wavering longevity under passing scrutiny.

Finally, SCOTUS has a slight conservative edge, with five of the nine justices affiliated with the Republican Party. This conservative ideology could be what New Jersey needs to strike down PASPA and restore states’ rights.

Working against them though is the fact that SCOTUS hasn’t overturned a federal ban under a Tenth Amendment violation since last century. In 55 years, there have only been two cases that have been successful on this front, in 1992 and in 1998.

That being said, the rulings in these two cases can work to New Jersey’s benefit. In 1992, Sandra Day O’Connor wrote for the majority and stated that “Congress cannot directly compel states to enforce federal regulations.” In 1998, it was Antonin Scalia who wrote the decision. “Forced participation of the state’s executive [powers] in the actual administration of a federal program…is unconstitutional.” PASPA does both.

In all, New Jersey does have a viable chance to win their case. It just needs to be argued expertly.

Last Tuesday, the Drone Racing League (DRL) announced a partnership with online gaming operator Betfair to offer sports betting on the final round of the Allianz World Championship. The event was held during London Tech Week and marks the UK’s first professional drone race.

“Drone racing is a sport made for betting,” stated DRL Founder Nicholas Horbaczewski. “It combines the raw thrill of short track racing with the complexity and strategy of motorsports. The Allianz World Championship race will be the first time a live audience will see the thrill of professional drone racing up close, and the inclusion of betting will make it that much more exciting for fans.”

The bet types available to spectators included the individual heat winners as well as the outright winner of the Allianz World Championship.

What Is Drone Racing?

If you are not familiar with drone racing, it is essentially a motorsport where individuals use a drone to complete an obstacle course in the shortest amount of time. Participants, who are referred to as pilots, wear a head-mounted display to provide a first-person view. The Allianz World Championship featured 8 FPV pilots, however, drone races can have varying numbers of participants. Hosts of the event describe the sport as combining “the thrill of pod-racing from Star Wars with the real world adrenaline-filled racing of Formula 1."

Drone Racing In N.J.

Darby Development operates Monmouth Park, and a key advisor to the company sees potential in the drone racing betting market. In an interview, Dennis Drazin mentioned how the addition of drone betting would complement the pari-mutuel wagering that the track already offers on horse races.

Legally, Drazin believes that the flying sport would mimic the same structure and rules as horse racing. Bets are placed together in a pool, with the pool becoming larger as more wagers are made. Instead of betting against the house, players bet against each other and the winnings are shared equally amongst winners.

When it comes to strategy, just as horse enthusiasts bet on the ponies based on the jockey and performance of the horse, drone bettors might consider the type of drone and the pilot when making wagers.

"I think you could see drone racing here next year," said Drazin.

The Rise Of Drone Racing

Though still a relatively new market, drone racing is rapidly increasing in popularity. A press release from the Drone Racing League revealed that the upcoming season is expected to be even bigger than the last.

"The 2017 Drone Racing League season will broadcast in more than 75 countries around the world, on partner channels including ESPN, Sky Sports, ProSiebenSat.1, Disney XD and OSN starting June. DRL’s ’16 season reached more than 75 million fans around the world, including more than 30 million broadcast viewers and more than 45 million views of its digital content."

This increased viewership could be attributed to the recent investments and partnerships that the DRL has procured. The league recently closed a Series B investment round that resulted in more than $20 million in funding. Some of the investors included Allianz, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Hearst Ventures, Courtside Ventures, and Liberty Media Corporation (Formula 1 owner).

"We're incredibly proud to announce new partners and investors aligning with DRL to solidify drone racing as the sport of the future," "Over the past 18 months, we've committed to building a technology company that can capture the imagination of new sports fans around the world. The support we have from some of the most respected brands and investors is helping us rapidly realize that vision," said Horbaczewski.

Sports betting in New Jersey may not be hosting live drone racing events just yet, but you can start watching the 2017 Drone Racing League season on June 20th.

In the world of betting, players are always looking to follow the action. Whether it’s on a football field, a pitching mound, or even a racetrack, bettors will always find new ways to bet on a game. Which is why there is something called historic racing popping up at racetracks all over the country. Historic racing, also known as Instant Racing, is the act of betting on races that have already taken place.

Betting can be done at terminals, which are similar in size and shape to slot machines or individual betting terminals. Players will deposit funds into the terminal, and then a race will be randomly selected from a video library containing tens of thousands of races. You don’t get told which race you’re betting on, only that it is an American Thoroughbred competition. To make it a game of skill, you will be given information like the location, date, and time of the race. The horses and jockey’s identities are also hidden.

To counter this, bettors will also be provided with statistics on the horses, like past performances and the trainer’s winning percentage. Players will then be able to bet on the race in a traditional pari-mutuel style. You can pick a winner, name a trifecta, or what have you. Once your wagers are deposited into the machine and your bets are placed, the machine will show a replay of the race. If you win, you’re paid out from a pool of previously collected bets.

While betting kind of blindly on a race that’s already taken place may seem hokey, experts estimated that over $1.1 billion has been wagered on “historical racing” in the US just last year alone. It actually saved horse racing in the state of Arkansas, while bringing in quite a bit of revenue at racetracks in Kentucky, Wyoming, and Oregon, as well. Averaged out, that’s about $275 million per state in extra revenue.

That giant boost in economic growth is a big reason why New Jersey is attempting to bring it to their racetracks. NJ has had a severe drop in revenue at their racetracks, due in large part to the lack of casino gambling at the tracks and the draw of larger purses at tracks in neighboring states. Ralph Caputo, an Assemblyman from northern New Jersey, said “the state needs revenue, the horse racing industry needs revenue. We’re very interested in any concept that will help.”

While many agree with Caputo, others are voicing their concerns, wondering if this sort of betting constitutes gaming at horse racing tracks, which is prohibited by state law. Proponents of historical racing quote industry reps, though, stating that it is a game of skill, not chance, much like pari-mutuel wagering. The ability to check a horse’s stats before the game, regardless of knowing his identity, is what really cements it as a form of legal betting at horse racing tracks, according to these reps.

Louis Cella, one of the track owners at Oaklawn in Arkansas, is urging state officials to add historic racing to their tracks. The terminals added to the historic track in Arkansas brought in hundreds of millions to a floundering business, allowing track owners to offer larger prizes and create more of a draw for bettors. When asked, Cella said “They’d be crazy not to [add instant racing]. Every racetrack that doesn’t have an alternative revenue source is going to fail.”

New Jersey’s racetracks lost their alternative revenue source in 2011 when Governor Chris Christie allowed casinos to end the nearly $30 million in annual subsidies sent to racetracks to make up for their lack of slot machines. So now, New Jersey racetracks are not allowed to offer slot machines because it might draw business away from the casinos in Atlantic City, but those casinos don’t have to offer assistance like they used to, which is killing the already dying horse racing business in NJ.

It also doesn’t help that those casinos are floundering financially, as well. The state of gambling in New Jersey has been taking hit after hit for years. And with the acting Solicitor General’s recommendation that SCOTUS throw out their sports betting case, Instant Racing might be exactly what the sports betting in New Jersey needs to get back on its feet.

On Monday, a majority of the New Jersey Assembly approved legislation that would regulate daily fantasy sports and levy taxes on operators.

NJ A3532, which would legalize paid-entry fantasy contests in the state, was approved by a 56-15 vote with three members abstaining.

Details Of NJ A3532

Sponsored by several Democratic Assembly members including Ralph Caputo, Vincent Mazzeo, and Paul Moriarty, the bill is not groundbreaking when it comes to the points that are proposed. In general, all states with legalized DFS have used a similar format when it comes to introducing legislation. You can read the full bill here, but here are the main components of the proposed bill: http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/bills/BillView.asp?BillNumber=A3532

The Division of Consumer Affairs would be given regulatory power over issuing permits and licensure to casinos, racetracks, and DFS operators.

Daily Fantasy Sports operators would be required to pay a 10.5% quarterly fee on all gross revenues.

Various consumer protections must be implemented, such as ensuring that participant funds are held separately from operating funds and that all participants are 18 or older.

If the bill were to pass, it would not put any restrictions on the season-long fantasy sports contests held in social settings among friends, coworkers, etc. Sponsors of the bill believe that NJ A3532 is more than sufficient from an economic standpoint, but has also been written with actual participants in mind.

In discussing the consumer protections aspect of the bill, Assemblyman and sponsor John Burzichelli stated that it, “…ensures that people can enjoy fantasy sports without being taken advantage of.”

What’s Up Next For DFS In NJ?

Though NJ A3532 passed by a large margin, it will now need to be approved by New Jersey’s Senate. There is currently a bill moving through the Senate that would tax operators 9.5% rather than the suggested 10.5%.

New Jersey has already started developing their own fantasy sports products, rather than leaving it up to giants like FanDuel and DraftKings. Their new FastPick fantasy sports parlay game is slated to be released at Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino by the end of the month. The product allows players to select players for anywhere between 3 to 10 matchups. Participants can then pick the players that they believe will accumulate the most points, and just as with any other parlay bet, all selections must be correct in order to win. The goal of the product is to continue to blur the lines of fantasy sports and sports betting to help normalize the overall perception of betting on sports.

All lights seem to be green on the fantasy sports front for sports betting in New Jersey, and after heading to the Senate the bill will need to be approved by Governor Chris Christie. This sheds some positive light on the state after the office of the Solicitor General filed a brief on Wednesday urging the Supreme Court not to hear the NJ sports betting case.

Even though it is starting to look as if New Jersey is going to have their appeal to legalize sports betting denied, New Jersey representative Frank Pallone will not stop pushing for it until the decision is final. ESPN reported that Pallone wrote a letter to the US Solicitor General Jeff Wall, asking that he tell the US Supreme Court to take up the sports betting case in New Jersey.

New Jersey is currently fighting against some major pro sports leagues and the NCAA, who are arguing that New Jersey is breaking the federal law of PASPA, which is the federal prohibition on single game sports wagering. The decision for whether or not the Supreme Court will take the case should be very soon. Once that happens, if SCOTUS (The Supreme Court of The United States) decides to take the case, the proceedings could begin as early as June.

Pallone Explains the Sports Betting Case

Pallone released a press release to explain the New Jersey sports betting case saying: “This case is about whether the Third Circuit accorded sufficient room to the State of New Jersey to effectuate the will of its citizens under New Jersey’s state Constitution, laws, and sovereign powers under the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,” Went on to say “Without the Supreme court’s review and a decision on this appeal, these areas of disagreement and conflict will inevitably grow and lead to more confusion. After all, the question of how a state authorizes sports gambling by law or compact without violating PASPA remains extremely hazy.”

Pallone was very adamant that the state of New Jersey and fellow petitioners feel as though PASPA is unlawful and have thought that all along. This is because they are using the law to disallow the state of New Jersey from permitting sports gambling acts that fall within the New Jersey State Laws and it’s Constitution.

“New Jersey should have the same opportunity to proceed with sports betting that has been allowed in other states,” He then said, “The Third Circuit’s decisions have usurped the power of New Jerseyans and the State of New Jersey to share in the considerable profits from sports betting.”

Even though it is not allowed in just about every state, online sports gambling is available anywhere. In fact, there is about $400 billion spent a year on sports gambling in the United States and just about all of that is through outlets that are technically “illegal”.

New Jersey’s Next Step

If the Solicitor General does help the cause and recommend that the Supreme Court take the case, it’s likely they will listen, though again it is unlikely. That doesn’t end hope though as the Supreme Court could decide to take the case without the SG’s recommendation.

On the likely chance that this is the end of the road for their argument to legalize sports betting in New Jersey, then New Jersey’s next step is to shift their focus to fantasy sports in NJ. Though, their main focus is still to get regulated sports gambling in New Jersey.

Before day one of the 2017 NFL draft, BetOnline sportsbook posted several betting lines on potential outcomes of the first round. Now that the first round has been completed, we are going to go back and take a look at which 2017 day one NFL betting lines the oddsmakers had right and which lines were posted that players won some money on.

2017 NFL Draft First Round Betting Results

BetOnline’s NFL draft odds for the first QB taken had Mitchell Trubisky as the favorite at -250. After a shocking trade that saw the Chicago Bears trade everything but the kitchen sink to move up one spot with the 49ers, the Bears drafted Trubisky with the second overall selection in the draft. Though he was not expected to go that high, he was largely considered the top QB in the draft. So the oddsmakers got that one technically right. They also had favorable odds for the SEC producing more than 10 first round picks, and the number of QB’s taken in the first. Both of which happened as the SEC had a whopping 12 first round selections and there were three QB’s taken in the first as well.

While the oddsmakers at BetOnline did get a few outcomes correct, there were also some betting lines that players likely won good money on too. One line, in particular, was the number of running backs taken in the first round. BetOnline had the line at -300 for more than 2.5 backs, and at +240 for the under. Just two ended up going as Leonard Fournette was taken fourth overall by the Jags and Christian McCaffrey was taken eighth overall by the Panthers. Dalvin Cook surprisingly fell out of the first round while Joe Mixon did as well, though he was expected. You also might have won yourself some money if you had bet on Deshaun Watson’s draft position. The over under on Watson going 12th or sooner were at -140 while anything over was at +110. Well, Deshaun Watson ended up going 13th overall to the Houston Texans, after being passed over twice by the likes of the Bears who took Trubisky and the Chiefs who traded up 17 spots to nab Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech.

2017 NFL Draft Day 2 Betting Lines

Some notable 2017 NFL draft day 2 betting lines to keep an eye on at BetOnline include Dalvin Cook and Joe Mixon’s landing spots, as well as who the first pick of the second round is going to be. Dalvin Cook’s projection is currently at +100 at over the 38th pick and -130 for the under. This can be significant because the only team that needs running back help from 33 to 38 is the Packers, who have the first pick of the second round. If they don’t take him then barring a trade up from another RB needy team, those sports betting in New Jersey who bet the over will be sitting pretty. Mixon is -105 for over the 41st pick and -125 for the under so not much difference in where you bet there. The odds for who the first pick of the second round will be are interesting because it actually has “The Field” as the favorite at -140 over guys who were projected to go in the first round that fell like Cook, Mixon, Kevin King, and Chidobe Awuzie. If the Packers keep that pick, those names should be the top options on their board as they need help at both RB and the cornerback position. Round one was as entertaining as it possibly could have been so let’s hope for the same kind of fireworks for day two in rounds 2 and 3.
